Viagra may soon be available in pharmacies without a prescription. A man who had to pay $500 for the little blue pill in his hand, was sentenced to a year in jail.
Pfizer said it was making the decision after a New York jury found him guilty of two counts of illegally importing a medicine in violation of the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) and three counts of illegally importing a drug in violation of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)’s regulations.
“The jury was instructed that Pfizer’s warning about the increased risks associated with Viagra is unfounded,” a Pfizer spokesperson said in a written statement. “Pfizer is taking remedial measures to address this issue and we are taking steps to ensure the continued availability of Viagra as a widely available treatment for erectile dysfunction.”
The federal case is the latest in a series of investigations into the FDA’s oversight of drug makers, and the government is in the process of launching its investigation.
Viagra was introduced in 1998 to treat erectile dysfunction. It was approved by the FDA in 2003 for the treatment of impotence.
The drug was originally developed as a treatment for diabetes. It was later found to be ineffective in treating other health conditions. Pfizer began developing sildenafil, a compound that can help treat erectile dysfunction.
The company said it hoped it would be available in pharmacies over the counter without a prescription.
The FDA said that it was “reviewing the safety and efficacy of this product” and that it had not received any adverse events, including cardiovascular or gastrointestinal problems.
Pfizer had promised to “take every precautionary way” when it introduced Viagra in 1998. It was also “relying on the data gathered from our own clinical trials”.
Pfizer’s patent on Viagra expired in June 2011. However, the patent protecting the drug expires in 2020.
Pfizer has been trying to get the drug in the United States since 2010, when it announced that it would not sell the drug, and it has said it would only sell the drug in 50 mg dosages.
Pfizer is not the only pharmaceutical company in the United States that makes Viagra. In the past six years, four other companies — Merck, Pfizer, Novartis, and Teva — have made Viagra available without a prescription.
“The issue of the Viagra patent has not been resolved,” said Dr. David A. Jaffe, chairman of the Department of Veterans Affairs health care policy and a professor at Harvard Medical School. “The FDA has acted responsibly.”
The FDA has oversight of drug makers in the United States, and it has made the drug available to U. S. consumers under a federal program called the National Community Pharmacists (NCP) program.
The NCP program, which includes pharmacies in the United States, was created in 1998 and is overseen by the Food and Drug Administration.
Pfizer is still requiring sites to offer a pharmacist a prescription for the drug and the government has said it would seek FDA approval for its application in the U.
Viagra is also marketed in Canada and other countries to treat erectile dysfunction.
The pharmaceutical industry has an extensive network of drugmakers, including Pfizer. The company that made Viagra in 1998 has more than 20,000 employees at all its drug manufacturing facilities.
Canadian and other pharmacies that sell Viagra are also regulated by the FDA. Some other countries have similar regulations.
“In Canada, Viagra is sold under the brand name Viagra and the brand-name VIAGRA and the generic name Revatio,” said Dr. William R. Lai, a professor of pharmacy and vice president of the Department of Veterans Affairs health care policy and affairs. “The generic drugs are not necessarily the same as the brand-name drugs. They’re all generic drugs.”
